Bow Thruster

Meaning

Definition

A transverse propulsion device installed in a tunnel through the bow of a vessel, used to improve manoeuvrability at low speeds during berthing and unberthing operations. Bow thrusters can be electric or hydraulically driven and produce lateral thrust to push the bow sideways without the need for tug assistance.
