Doldrums

The equatorial region of calm or light variable winds between the northern and southern trade wind belts, also known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The doldrums are characterised by hot, humid conditions with frequent heavy rain squalls and thunderstorms, and were historically dreaded by sailing vessels for their unpredictable and often windless conditions.
