Definition

A type of internal combustion engine that completes a power cycle in two strokes of the piston (one revolution of the crankshaft). Two-stroke diesel engines are the dominant propulsion choice for large commercial vessels due to their high thermal efficiency, ability to burn heavy fuel oil, and low operating speeds suitable for direct-drive propeller coupling.
