On 28 April 2018, the Canadian Coast Guard vessel "GEORGE R. PEARKES", with 31 people on board, sustained a total power failure, resulting in the loss of propulsion, power, and steering. The vessel was approximately 0.3 nautical miles west of White Rocks, and anchored to avoid grounding. The power was restored approximately 2.5 hours later. The blackout was caused by the failure of the machinery control room uninterrupted power supply (UPS), which will need to be replaced.

The source was determined to be a searchlight starter panel and the fire and smoke dissipated when the searchlight was turned off.

On 09 January 2017, the service ship "GEORGE R. PEARKES" reported a deckhand fell overboard from the barge that was retrieving buoys in Pacquet harbor, NL. He was retrieved 15 to 20 seconds after falling in the water and did not suffer any injuries. The barge returned to the ship where the deckhand changed into dry clothes, was checked by the rescue specialist, and later returned to work.

About This Vessel
CCGS George R. Pearkes is a Martha L. Black-class light icebreaker and buoy support vessel in the Canadian Coast Guard. Named for Victoria Cross-winner George Pearkes, the ship entered service in 1986. Initially assigned to Pacific region, the vessel transferred to the Quebec region. George R. Pearkes was assigned to her current deployment, the Newfoundland and Labrador region in 2004.
