Definition

A system that captures thermal energy from the main engine's exhaust gases and cooling water to generate additional electrical power or steam. Waste heat recovery systems improve overall propulsion plant efficiency by converting energy that would otherwise be lost, reducing fuel consumption by up to 8-10 percent.
